A Promise of Magic by Melissa Giorgio

Silver Moon Saga #2.5

A Promise of Magic
As a child growing up in California, Evan Underwood only has a basic knowledge of Silver Moon, the organization that keeps the world safe from demons. After accidentally setting his parents’ house on fire with magic, he’s sent to the New York Silver Moon HQ to learn how to control his powers. Frustrated by his teacher’s refusal to show him anything beyond magical theory, Evan decides it’s time to take matters into his own hands. But teaching himself magic isn’t as easy as Evan imagined, and it’s during one of these practice sessions that he’s discovered by Alexandra Chen, a strange girl Evan finds both frustrating and alluring. Making a promise to show Alex magic, Evan is determined to live up to her expectations, even if it means breaking a few rules in the process. But when things backfire, Evan must rely on his friends to help free him from the clutches of a new, sinister character.

A Promise of Magic spans the course of eight years, and readers will delight in the appearances of old friends and new characters as Evan navigates his life through the busy streets of New York. With two bonus stories that set up The Shadow Stealer, the final book in the series, Silver Moon Saga fans are in for a real treat.

Review

In this novella, we have three stories, the main one being told from Evan's point of view.We get to see how Evan discovered magic and that he was talented when it come to learning and using magic. We see his first time in Silver Moon Headquarters and how he met and protected Rafe from the beginning. We also see how he met Alex and how much he came to like her.

I loved to see Evan change from a shy and playful boy to a strong magic user that would protect his friend with everything he could and that he liked Alex since the first time they met and fought to stay together with her despite the fact her parents hated him and hated how Alex wanted to be a hunter. We get to see how much Evan really loved her and how broken he was after the accident that left her in a coma. We really get not only this glimpse of Evan but we also get a glimpse of how Rafe was before he met Gabi.
The second story is mostly from after the happenings in the second book and tells about Philip and his conflicting emotions toward Kain, since the last time he confessed his feelings to someone, things went from bad to worse and Phil really doesn't want Kain to think that of him too.

This story was funny, sweet, and make us ship even more the Philip and Kain pair. Really nice addition and very needed if you plan to understand some of the things they say about each other in the third and last book of this series.

The last story is another glimpse of how cute the Rafe and Gabi couple can be, I can't seem to get tired of their interaction with each other. They have such an honest relationship and kind of innocent one despite the fact that Gabi is just impossible and Rafe is really shy.
